What We Do

As well as providing Buddies for people seeking refuge, we also work on a variety of other activities.

The Buddy Programme

This is where it all started. Buddying is at the heart of what we do, matching local families with newly arriving people seeking refuge. We started in Hastings in 2017, branching out in the Bexhill area in early 2019, and from May 2019 became active in Wealden as well.

The Project now also works with the wider community of people seeking refuge in Hastings as part of the Home Office Asylum Dispersal Scheme, in which people are still in the process of claiming asylum.

Projects

From our Volunteer Buddy Programme to collaborative community events and experiences, our projects aim to provide a positive experience of welcome for people seeking refuge in Hastings and the surrounding areas. We also provide informal English conversation support and orientation assistance.

Partnerships

We welcome projects and collaborative work from artists, communities, organisations and public sectors from all identities, environments and experiences that are focused on refugee and migrant rights and can demonstrate how in their practice they share our project ethos and values. Campaigns

We campaign within our Charitable Objects of ensuring the physical and emotional wellbeing of all people seeking refuge in Hastings, Rother and Wealden. Our campaigns are formed in consultation with our project participants, and relate to the issues they are facing or have faced.

Reports

Our reports come about in consultation with our project participants. Our aim is to provide a voice for the community, promoting and amplifying their voices to effect change. All our research supports our goal of improving the lives of people seeking refuge in our community, based on the barriers they have identified.
